NFC tech on the rise in identity verification

More companies and federal agencies are using NFC technology to allow for fast and secure identity verification processes.

PXL Vision expressly welcomes FINMA‘s willingness in the proposed draft amendment to expand the scope of online identification. Since the use of a biometric NFC document chip is an extremely secure procedure, FINMA’s approval within the scope of identification is purposeful and logical.

The process started in November 2020 and new regulations will likely be published by July 2021.

PXL Vision has worked and researched NFC technology since 2018, creating time saving and lower cost tech for their customers.

However, NFC technology is not the only effective method. PXL’s whitepaper responding to the FINMA revision highlights even more suitable options for digital and automated verification of identities that can already be implemented with today’s state of the art technology: https://pages.pxl-vision.com/de/finma-whitepaper (German).

PXL Vision launches NFC verification capability for all customers

Swiss market leader PXL Vision offers its customers the opportunity to verify documents using Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology

As an online identity verification company, Zurich based PXL Vision are able to utilize NFC technology, permitting individuals to identify themselves by using their electronic passports or other NFC-equipped identity documents.

NFC is defined as a set of communication protocols for a two-way wireless data transfer between two electronic devices. “Near-field” refers to the fact that the two devices have to be positioned near one another in order to communicate – with a maximum distance of 10 centimeters or less.

Biometric documents

An advantage of NFC is that it’s an open technology and standards-based. Universal standards provide more choices for customers and lead to more stable systems. NFC also works with multiple systems. For example, smartphone based NFC already works with existing contactless card technologies.

In the field of identity verification, biometric documents offer the possibility to enable an ultra secure method of proving that a document is authentic, while ensuring the accuracy of the data that is extracted from it.

According to PXL Vision Chief Product Officer Roxana Porada, NFC technology will offer PXL Vision’s customers significant cost savings and help to decrease the amount of time it takes to onboard end users.

“NFC enables our customers to fully automate the process of onboarding and to verify users identity, as they can rely on the authenticity and accuracy of the data being extracted from the NFC chip”, she said.

“It will lower the manual costs and the time to onboard users significantly.”

One of the key strengths of NFC chips is its security. Many modern passports already have an encrypted NFC/RFID chip built-into them with varying types of information (data) embedded in them – depending on the jurisdiction. In some jurisdictions, the data might even be biometric in nature.

“An NFC chip has a secure way of being accessed, namely because the data from the chip is signed by an issuing government, which means if the data is somehow tampered with or falsified it will automatically fail the signature check,” Ms Porada added.

“The only downside of NFC is that most ID documents worldwide do not include it, although most passports do. Furthermore, this feature is only available on a native mobile application at the moment and not for desktops due to the fact that through a web browser, access to the NFC chip of a passport is not yet available.”

“Hopefully Google and Apple will enable this in the near future.”

Artificial Intelligence against identity fraud: PXL Vision secures CHF 4.6 Million (USD 4.7 million) seed financing

Zurich, 20th May 2020 – ETH spin-off PXL Vision has developed an AI-based software platform to deliver secure, automated identity verification. The company has now received CHF 4.6 million in a seed financing round to expand its technology and grow internationally. The financing round was led by SIX Fintech Ventures. Other investors include ZKB, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Arab Bank and the experienced business angels Beat Schillig and David Studer.

Billions of personal datasets are stolen every year and are frequently used for fraudulent purposes. Trust in digital interactions is therefore crucial. More and more companies are now moving towards verifying their customers’ identities beyond any doubt. They need digital solutions that are secure, cost-effective, easy to use and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Flexible identity verification in real-time

PXL Vision has developed a digital KYC verification platform that offers a great deal of flexibility to its business customers and is highly modular compared to competitor products. The platform uses Artificial Intelligence in order to verify an identity document in real-time using the smartphone camera, and to confirm the user identity via a liveness check and a face comparison with a video selfie, all with minimal user interaction. Alongside SwissID, the leading Swiss identity provider, several large companies such as Sunrise, Salt, UPC and ZKB rely on PXL Vision’s technology. There are many application fields: from closing a mobile phone contract online, regardless of location, to opening bank accounts electronically within a few minutes, such as with ZKB’s Frankly app for pension savings.

Growth financing completed

Since its foundation three years ago, PXL Vision has established itself on the Swiss market. The team has grown from four to over forty and PXL Vision has been recognized with important entrepreneurial prizes such as the Swiss Economic Award 2019, the W.A. De Vigier Award 2019, and the Swisscom Startup Challenge Award 2019. The company has also successfully completed both the SAP.iO and the F10 Fintech Incubator & Accelerator programs.

“Having demonstrated that we can compete against large and established suppliers in a very competitive market, it is now time to expand beyond national borders,” says PXL Vision CEO Michael Born. Together with Nevena Shamoska, Roxana Porada, Lucas Sommer and Karim Nemr, Born founded PXL Vision in 2017. The experienced interdisciplinary management team had already worked together for several years at Dacuda AG and successfully sold Dacuda assets to Florida-based Magic Leap in February 2017 before founding PXL Vision.

In order to be able to grow even more quickly, PXL Vision has raised CHF 4.6 Million (USD 4.7 million) in seed funding. The financing round was led by SIX Fintech Ventures, the Swiss Stock Exchange VC. The other investors are ZKB, High Tech Gründerfonds and Arab Bank, as well as the experienced Business Angels Beat Schillig (IfJ) and David Studer (Xovis).

“PXL Vision’s unique AI technology and innovation pipeline, its flexible and modular product portfolio and the impressive track record of its experienced management team convinced us. We fully expect PXL Vision to become one of the leading providers of digital identity solutions worldwide,” says Andreas Iten, Head of SIX Fintech Ventures, who will support PXL Vision in the coming growth phase as a member of the management board.

The access to growth capital will enable PXL Vision to further expand its product portfolio and enter new markets and industries. The financing is intended to help PXL Vision move forward rapidly: “We are investing primarily in the intelligence and scalability of our technology, as well as in the international expansion of the business. We will substantially expand the sales, marketing and development teams to further drive growth,” says Karim Nemr, PXL Vision’s Chief Business Officer.

Case Study: Zürcher Kantonalbank. How PXL Vision solved ZKB’s identity verification requirements.

The Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) is a bank close to its customers. Drawing from an international network while also acknowledging its regional roots, the company has positioned itself as a universal bank. With assets totaling CHF 167 billion and more than 5100 employees (part-time adjusted), Zürcher Kantonalbank is the largest cantonal bank in Switzerland and one of the largest of the Swiss banks. In the greater Zurich area, they hold the leading position in universal banking. Customers benefit from a comprehensive range of products and services from Zürcher Kantonalbank’s core businesses in financing, investment/asset management, trading and the capital market, as well as the deposit, payment and card business.

Challenge

Swiss pensions are of significant interest for banks given that they are now valued at more than 1 trillion USD (2019). Digitalization, however, is still not very advanced in this area; although customers are undoubtedly interested in this kind of solution. For example, a recent study by ti&m showed that 46 percent of survey participants would favor opening an online pension savings account. Their reasons for this include flexibility and convenience as well as competitive conditions. Existing at the forefront of digital financial services in Switzerland, the Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) planned to launch a completely new digital-only business model for private pension fund investments. For these purposes, they launched their “frankly” app, which emphasised a fully-digital onboarding process.

With the frankly app, ZKB wanted to establish a digital-only model in order to offer lower fees and higher return possibilities for end-users. In order to remove the need for customers to register on the site while maintaining high-security standards and compliance with regulations, ZKB was looking for a fully compliant digital onboarding and identity verification solution. With future use cases already in mind, the team required an experienced digital identity verification partner whose products offered sufficient flexibility.

“We wanted a state-of-the-art solution and a future-proof partner that could provide us with the best User Experience for an easy, compliant and secure onboarding process, not only for frankly, but also for all future use cases” – ZKB CEO, Martin Scholl

Solution

ZKB found a partner in PXL Vision whose product offered first-rate flexibility which not only covered a fully-compliant FINMA identification process but also the re-identification of ZKB’s existing customer base. By seamlessly integrating PXL Vision’s identity verification solution, customers can complete the onboarding process within just a few minutes within the frankly app. Thus, instead of registering on the site, customers can simply use their smartphone to recognize, capture and determine the authenticity of the information on their identity documents in seconds. For identity verification purposes, a quick and simple video-selfie is taken while the user’s liveness is checked. The machine learning algorithms automatically ensure the presence of a real person behind the camera (via passive liveness detection) and then matches the user’s face against the document’s photo (via facial recognition), providing the basis for the verification.

In anticipation of upcoming regulatory changes in Switzerland (FINMA Revision), ZKB was looking for a future-proof partner that could help with its technological expertise in jointly pushing the regulators towards the right changes. PXL Vision has proven to be the ideal partner, with its highly secure, fully-automated and future-proof technology. While frankly was the first use case, it was clear that PXL Vision is already well-positioned to cover future regulatory changes, such as the need for NFC biometric chip verification, which PXL Vision already has onboard.

Outcome

Launched in March 2020, the frankly pension app is a 100% digital product allowing its services to be available at all times. The onboarding process with biometric login allows users to identify and register via a smartphone in a few minutes. Since its launch, Zürcher Kantonalbank has already managed to onboard 1000s of users.

PXL Vision not only supported ZKB with the technological integration of their product into their business process, but also with their expertise in the regulatory challenges together with the bank. By joining forces, ZKB and PXL Vision have proven the security of online identity verification, and they are already preparing for a fully compliant process according to the revised FINMA Circular 2016/7, which should enter into force by the middle of 2021.

PXL Vision offers free Identity Verification to Corona affected small businesses to continue business as usual – or better!

Recognizing the gravity and economic struggle associated with Corona, PXL Vision wants to support small companies which are affected by the crisis. PXL Vision offers it’s secure, compliant and easy to use identity verification service Daego® to qualifying businesses for free.

Many businesses – including PXL Vision’s customers Sunrise, Salt, UPC (Liberty Global), SwissID, ZKB, Quickline and more – have prepared for the digital age and have the ability to onboard and serve their customers completely remotely at any time without the need for a physical presence. During the current crisis they have the necessary agility and can continue to support and serve their customers.

Others are in a less comfortable situation: As the new Corona virus continues to spread on a global level, they see themselves confronted with a significant challenge. In times when national states of emergency and public lockdowns are declared, businesses which need to securely verify their customers but still heavily depend on distributing products or services through physical stores and point-of-sales are deeply impacted. They experience halted sales and can’t do new business as social distancing is encouraged or shops even have to remain closed. This may apply to mobile operators, insurances, banks, marketplaces, transportation and mobility providers, to name just a few, and may have devastating economic effects.

For affected companies, it is now time to act rather than remain passive and hope things will get better soon. Moving the full sales and onboarding process online will help companies prevent losses and ultimately even benefit from the crises by improving their competitiveness thanks to future proof and fully automated digital processes.

PXL Vision wants to enable such transformations and is committed to help mitigate the impact of the crisis. PXL Vision therefore offers it’s secure, compliant and easy to use identity verification service Daego® to qualifying businesses for free until the end of July, and if necessary will extend the period until the crisis is over.

Winner of Swiss Economic Award continues growth in Swiss Telco Market with Quickline partnership

Swiss start-up PXL Vision, winner of the Swiss Economic Forum Award 2019, continues to grow its position within the Swiss Telco market with the addition of its most recent client Quickline. Quickline, one of Switzerland’s largest mobile operators and fourth largest full-service telecom provider, has launched a mobile solution for customer onboarding using PXL Vision’s Daego® platform for identity verification. Looking to eliminate the cumbersome and expensive process of manually verifying a customer’s identity, the new solution enables a completely digital workflow for customer onboarding, without requiring the customer to be physically present.

Quickline partnered with PXL Vision to build a mobile app to deliver more efficient and secure digital identity workflows and an improved onboarding experience. “The app allows our customers to easily scan their ID and record a video selfie using a mobile device”, says Marc Loosli, Director Innovation of Quickline Holding. PXL Vision’s biometric facial recognition engine then ensures the document actually belongs to the user by comparing the face from the video selfie to the photo on the document. “This removes the need for any physical identification, allowing users to close a Quickline subscription anytime and from anywhere”, Marc Loosli explains.

Since its deployment with other leading Swiss companies in 2017, PXL Vision has worked hard on further developing its Daego® (digital alter ego) platform for secure and efficient identity verification. These efforts are clearly paying off after winning the high-tech category at the 2019 SEF Awards. “We are extremely proud of the recognition by the SEF, and are excited that Quickline has chosen our technology to help improve sales conversions, reduce fraud, and drive down the cost of customer onboarding” says Karim Nemr, Founder and CBO of PXL Vision. PXL Vision’s Daego® platform is a highly scalable software solution that allows businesses across industries to turn inefficient manual processes into effective, user-friendly, reliable digital identity workflows.
